How to Create a Timed Mock Exam in WordPress

A real test-prep platform needs more than a static quiz. With VaultLMS you can build full-length, timed mock exams that pull fresh questions from your bank each attempt — the same experience students get on the real exam.

Before you start

Make sure your questions are imported and tagged by Chapter (see importing questions from Excel). Chapters become the pools your exam draws from.

Build the exam

  1. Create a new quiz in VaultLMS → Questions & Quizzes.
  2. Add question pools — choose how many questions to pull from each chapter, so every attempt is a fresh, randomized exam.
  3. Set the pass mark (e.g. 72%) and the number of attempts allowed.
  4. Enable a time limit to simulate real exam pressure.
  5. Turn on explanations on review so students learn from every miss.

Put it on a page

Place the exam anywhere with the [vaultlms_quiz] shortcode, or inside a lesson in the course player. See the shortcodes reference for options.

Why pools matter

Because each attempt is randomized from a larger bank, students can’t just memorize a fixed set — they’re tested on the whole syllabus, and a readiness picture builds up across attempts. This is what separates a true exam simulator from a one-off quiz, and it’s a core reason course creators choose VaultLMS for test prep.
